Steev Perez is self taught Illustrator and Fine Artist
Inspired by his roots in El Barrio, Steev has sought to bridge worlds through his art. Using mixed media, his work creates visual narratives about coming of age in public housing. He approaches these narratives with the same playfulness of a child, commonly using crayons, alongside fine art materials and traditional cartooning styles. His work colorfully demonstrates the ways in which children internalize communal pathologies and personalities - the neighborhood hustler, the pissy project elevator or the abuelas shuffling around their shopping carts. His work provokes thought by making light of a landscape often dismissed as derelict. Rather than being motives for escaping the hood, those very voids can be opportunities for creativity, satire, reflection and beauty.
